This recipe was a bit of an experimental one. I was influenced by this scene in 'V for Vendetta', where V is cooking an egg within a slice of bread (known as an 'egg in the basket'). I then saw this video which took it too the next level, by inserting a layer of cheese between the slices and thus, converting it into a grilled cheese sandwich. Stay tuned for more of this experimental wonder.
Ingredients needed to get started:
1. 2 eggs
2. 2 slices of white bread (white works best, but you can substitute)
3. Cheddar cheese, sliced (or your favourite melting cheese)
4. Butter
Step 1: Prepare the bread
To begin, preheat the grill to 180°C, then place two pieces of white bread on a plate.
Using a glass, press down in the center of each slice, making a hole. Save these cutouts for later.
Step 2: Cook the eggs/bread
To a non-stick frying pan on a medium heat, add a small amount of butter.
Then place in the slice of bread.
Quickly crack an egg into the center of the bread.
Once you can see that the bottom of the egg has set, move the bread around a little with a spatula, teasing the edges up with it. If it feels ready, flip the slice over quickly.
WOW! How cool is that?! It's like a portable fully nutritious breakfast! But it doesn't end here...
Let it cook for a few more minutes on this side, then set it aside on a plate. Repeat the steps again for the second slice of bread.
My second slice got slightly burnt, but it'll be okay. Now, stack sliced cheese in-between the two bread slices and then pop it under the grill for the next 10 minutes, just to melt the cheese.
Step 3: Pre-breakfast snack
In the meantime, heat up the pan again, and pop in the two cut outs we saved from before.
These should be really quick, only a minute or two on each side to get toasted. Top with jam or Nutella, and there you have a pre-breakfast snack to munch on, while you wait for the cheese to melt.
Back to the sandwich! If the cheese has melted by now, take it out of the grill.
Cut it in half.
And serve!
It looks a tad messy, but tastes so good :)
This was a fun dish to create because I have never seen anything like it before. It's almost everything you need to start the day (carbohydrates, protein, calcium) all rolled into one compact & quick grilled sandwich!

P.S. You could mix it up by using cookie cutters too! This is one cool example I found online.
