Chunky vomit, or fried rice? You be the judge. I got my inspiration from this video, but the final result turned out nothing like it. To make things even worse, my camera did not save a couple of the photos I took while I was cooking, so I'm missing photos for a few of the key steps. I had to use screenshots from the recipe video, to fill the sections where my camera failed to work. Here goes my attempt at fried rice!

What we will need to get started:
1. Cooked rice, broken up (left over, refrigerated rice is supposedly the best type)
2. 4 eggs
3. 8 slices of ham, diced
4. Pre-cooked pork, sliced (substitute for sautéed chicken or beef if you prefer)
5. 5 Shiitake mushrooms, rehydrated
6. 1 small packet of mixed vegetables
7. 1 brown onion, diced
8. 1 spring onion, sliced
9. Garlic, minced
10. Ginger, minced
11. Soy sauce
12. Kecap manis (Indonesian sweet soy sauce)
13. Salt & pepper
14. 1 chicken stock cube, crushed
15. Optional: lemon juice
Step 1: Chop and prep
Dice the brown onion.
Dice the ham.
Rehydrate the dehydrated mushrooms in boiling water for 5 minutes. Drain, rinse and squeeze out any remaining moisture from the mushrooms.
Step 2: Turn up the heat!
Start off by heating up a wok on high, with a fair amount of oil in it. When the oil starts smoking, add the onions, garlic, ginger and ham, stirring quickly to prevent it sticking. Allow to sauté for a few minutes, until the onions have softened.
Unfortunately, this is the part where my camera decided to stop working properly and did not save any photos. Sadly, I didn't realise this was the case until after I was done cooking, so I have no photos of the actual process :( I am so annoyed! To substitute for the lack of visuals, I have taken screenshots of the video I referenced earlier, and will be using those instead to illustrate the rest of the procedure.
Add in the rice and mix well.

After incorporating the sauté mixture with the rice, make a well in the center and crack in the eggs.

Break the yolk quickly with the spatula and mix up the egg so it scrambles. Once the egg is semi-cooked, mix the rice and egg together. Once mixed, add the mixed vegetables, soy sauce and kecap manis.

Finish off by adding the rest of the ingredients (shredded pork, sliced mushroom, sliced spring onion, salt and pepper, chicken stock cube) to the dish and allow to heat through, stirring constantly. When ready, serve hot and enjoy!
This very unappealing dish is my final result. The rice did not stay fluffy, instead got very gluey and mashed. The flavour was quite good, but it was definitely too salty and I couldn't eat too much of it. The whole recipe was a total fail, and I don't even have photographic proof of the fail process because the camera stopped working. Double fail.
But no, my bad luck didn't stop there. I had a huge mess in the kitchen to clean up after.
And a wok full of burnt rice that I had to scrape off.
Mum is probably not going to be pleased when she gets home :P
